About Chief’s Island
Chief’s Island is big with 250 acres. The island was acquired from the government about 1876 by James Campbell who was nicknamed Chief, hence the name Chief’s Island. It remained in the families of his descendants until about 1985 when a few portions were sold to non-relatives. There are only 10 cottages on this island and the 33-acre conservancy restricts further development.
The New York Times has called Muskoka the Malibu of the North. Toronto Life magazine had this to say, “Of the three major Muskoka lakes, Joseph is cottage country’s most star-studded. Its lots – generally bigger than those on nearby Rosseau and Muskoka – attract celebrities and business titans…” not to mention lots of NHL hockey players.
According to the Travel Muskoka web site, “Muskoka, Canada located 1.5 hours north of Toronto is a vast district of 1,600 shimmering lakes, thundering waterfalls and sheer granite cliffs, aromatic pine forests and dense maple forests that turn crimson and gold in the Autumn…all wrapped in pure clean air from way above sea level, in some places 1,296 feet.
And if you search the internet for “muskoka attractions” you’ll discover the many ways to enjoy Muskoka in every season.
The Rumford fireplace is a tall, shallow fireplace designed by Sir Benjamin Thompson (Count Rumford), a physicist known for investigations of heat. The angled sides are designed to reflect heat into the room and the streamlined throat carries away smoke with little loss of heat. It takes a master craftsman to build a Rumford fireplace. Each stone in our fireplace was hand picked for size, shape and colour.
